Experienced nonprofit leader brings extensive background in community relations, fundraising, and strategic planning

Edgar and Clark County, IL - HRC announced today that Susan Tybon, MA, has been chosen as the organization's next Executive Director, replacing Jonathan Burns who is departing the position after six years of distinguished service. The announcement follows a comprehensive four-month search process led by HRC's Board of Directors.

"Replacing a leader of Jonathan's caliber is a monumental task, and I am incredibly thankful to the Search Committee members for their diligence and dedication throughout this process," said David Hamilton, President of HRC's Board of Directors. "Susan rose to the top of a very talented applicant pool. Her resume speaks for itself, and it is her character, authenticity, and compassion that give us confidence in her ability to lead HRC into the future."

Tybon brings over 15 years of executive leadership experience in the nonprofit sector, with a proven track record of transforming organizations and building stronger communities. Most recently serving as President and CEO of YWCA North Central Indiana since 2018, she has demonstrated exceptional ability to streamline operations while expanding programs and services that directly benefit those in need.

Her leadership philosophy centers on empowering others and fostering collaborative relationships. At the Susan G. Komen Chicagoland Affiliate, where she served as Chief Executive Officer from 2014-2016, Tybon was recognized for her innovative approach to community engagement and her ability to inspire both staff and volunteers toward a shared mission of ending breast cancer.

Throughout her career, Tybon has shown remarkable skill in bringing people together for common causes. At JASC in Chicago, she successfully guided organizational growth while maintaining the personal touch that makes nonprofit work meaningful. Her tenure at Autism Speaks demonstrated her commitment to advocacy and her talent for creating programs that truly make a difference in families' lives.

From 2010-2018, Tybon operated as an independent consultant, dedicating herself to helping nonprofit organizations strengthen their capacity to serve their communities. Her collaborative approach and deep understanding of the challenges facing nonprofits made her a sought-after partner for organizations seeking sustainable growth and enhanced community impact.

"Throughout her career, Susan has demonstrated an exceptional ability to connect with people from all walks of life," noted Hamilton. "She has a gift for bringing out the best in others and creating environments where staff, volunteers, and community members feel valued and heard. Her authentic leadership style and genuine compassion for those we serve makes her ideally suited to advance HRC's mission."

Tybon holds a Master of Arts degree in Community Psychology from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from California State University. She has completed a Mini-MBA in Healthcare Management from Loyola University in Chicago.

"I am humbled and honored to have the privilege of leading an organization with such a rich history and profound impact on people's lives," said Tybon. "What draws me to HRC is the organization's unwavering commitment to treating every individual with dignity and respect. I look forward to working alongside the extraordinary board of directors, dedicated staff, and passionate volunteers to continue building hope and creating pathways to healing and growth for our community members."

Tybon will officially assume her role as Executive Director on September 1, 2025. She will replace Burns, who under his leadership and vision has grown HRC to become the most significant provider and safety net for mental health, addiction treatment, and services for people who have developmental and intellectual disabilities in the region.
