Respite is a service for developmentally disabled individuals and their families which provides short term community-based supervision to maintain the individual in the family setting.  This is accomplished through providing temporary relief to caregivers from daily care responsibilities by skilled service providers.

Respite care usually occurs in the family home where up to ten hours of supervision and training may be provided per day in a planned or emergency situation.  Respite providers are individually linked with families to promote a comfortable environment.

In cases where overnight or extended care is needed, temporary residential placement can be sought in a licensed or certified residential setting.

Who is eligible for HRC's Respite Care?

bulletAny developmentally disabled child or adult who resides in Edgar or Clark Counties, who:
bullethas completed the enrollment process with the Human Resources Center and has been approved by the Department of Human Services
bullethas participated in developing an individualized habilitation plan

What about cost?

The program is funded by the Department of Human Services at no cost to the individual or family.

How does one apply?

Call the Human Resources Center Case Coordination Unit who will arrange for a home visit along with the Community Services Director to open enrollment and develop an individual habilitation plan.

Who provides Respite services?

Employees of the Human Resources Center who are at least eighteen years old, have a clear understanding of the needs of the individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, and who have completed training as mandated by Respite guidelines provide Respite.  Respite providers are individually linked with the families they serve so that families and providers are comfortable and confident about the care provided.  Anyone interested in becoming a Respite provider should apply at the Human Resources Center.
